at a pizza restaurant is recovering from a gunshot. we'll tell you what we know from the woman's condition this morning and the two men that police are searching for. >> we are live in south san francisco where the search for a missing canoer continues at this hour. we are now in the seventh hour of this search. we'll tell you what we have learned about the people that he was with. mornings on 2 continue. good morning. thank you for joining us tuesday morning, february 17th i'm pam cook. >> good morning, i'm dave clark. we will tell you more about a developing story from san mateo county in just a couple of minutes. first let's check weather and traffic. steve is right over there. >> fog but not the inland fog. coastal fog. oakland 75 for a high.

coast and bay will cool down. there is an extensive fog bank out there. temps have been so warm you get a little bit more of a westerly breeze and there she goes. the low clouds are moving inland and making a strong push. it's hard to see. they are in the gray there. over all temperatures 40s for a few but mainly 50s. i mean these are going to stay right here just due to the mere fact that everyone says cloudy and the higher elevations have come way down. that is a cooler pattern. 50s on the surface including morgan hill and gilroy. there is the west, southwest delta breeze. cooler even for inland areas that were in the 70s yesterday. there will be a lot of 60nd today.

upper 50s. southbound 101. it will be taken off the freeway because of a van that hit the center divide and damaged some of the posts and the chain link fence that separates the two sides of the freeway. southbound 101 is being taken off. there is a backup now. this is the noncommute direction for most people on southbound 101. it could effect northbound 101 as rubber neckers take a look at the freeway. so far 280 and 101 are not too bad in the commute direction for most people. and again not everyone commutes the same way. most people are trying to get on northbound 101. northbound 280 or northbound 85. let's move along and take a look at 880 north and southbound. the traffic here is looking good in both directions past the coliseum. we have a 15-20 minute delay before you get into san francisco. let's go back to the desk.

now if the latest in the search for the man missing on a tragic canoe accident. tara moriarty has learned the man's father has died. the son remains missing. >> reporter: he is 22 years old. the search continues at this hour. we know the coast guard has assumed control of the search for now. they are trying to refuel and they will come back out here when it is light out which is in 45 minutes. now we know that the three people set out front the place where we are standing at the oyster point arena around 1:30 yesterday afternoon in a canoe to go fishing. this was the 22-year-old. his 22-year-old girlfriend and his 54-year-old father. we know that the canoe sank. the 22-year-old boy decided to swim to shore for help. he has been missing ever since. the 54-year-old man and 22-year- old girlfriend were found a mile or two offshore in life jackets. sadly the father later died at a hospital.

the woman was found at 1:20 in the morning. the father around 2:00 in the morning. we know the woman is is still being treated a the the hospital. south san francisco fire and foster city fire are part of this search. we are in the 7th hour own the boater in distress call came until before 10:30 last night. the search gradually moved southward. it's extended 12-miles to the san mateo bridge. we have seen foster city police and fire searching the waters edge with flashlights. they are looking for any possible sign of this young man. we are told that he was wearing a blue life jacket, gray shorts with white stripes and a black jacket with the word security printed on the back. right now obviously it doesn't look good at this point because it's been so long and hyperthermia can set in. again the search is really going to be a little bit easier for crews once the sun comes up. so they will get a lot better look at what is exactly going out on the bay. we are live in south city tara moriarty, back to you. >> all right we will check in

throughout the morning. thank you. our time is 6:04. el cerrito police are searching for two men with shot a pizza parlor worker during a take over robbery last night. alex savidge is joining us live to tell us what we know about how that pizza parlor worker is doing this morning. >> reporter: good morning, to you. the victim was shot in the arm during that robbery last night and the good news in all of this she was alert and talking as paramedics took her away after the shooting. the victim works at a little caesars pizza restaurant. she was apparently working the register last night just before 8:30 when two men stormed into the business demanding money. those armed men were wearing hooded sweatshirts that covered up their faces and at some point during this holdup, one of the robbers opened fire on the employee. hitting her in the arm. the men grabbed cash and took

off out of the business. it's unclear exactly what prompted the men to open fire but police say they are troubled by how this robbery ended with gunfire. >> we have had one not too long ago. but certainly not this level of violence. this is the first one like this in a long time. it's disturbing. >> reporter: there were a couple witnesses last night that saw the two robbers running through the parking lot where the little caesars restaurant is located. and of course police are hoping that anyone who knows anything about this violent holdup last night will put in a call to the police department. you can imagine investigators would like to hear from more witnesses in this case. >> thank you. alex savidge is live in el

cerrito. thank you. today could be a really tough day for air travel. another winter storm is baring down on the northeast. more than 2500 flights were canceled nationwide just as people were trying to get back home after the holiday weekend. so far bay area airports not reporting any significant flight delays. but it's a different story in new york and boston and washington, d.c.. we will bring you another live report from washington where it's cold and snow has shut down the federal government. in the last year more than 200 dogs and cats who's owners had to choose between their pets and a place to live brought in their pets. rents have sored. landlords can be pickier about their tent thans. >> a lot of these animals that are lose their homes are really sweet and mellow.

just great pets. it's really, really unfortunate. >> the spca says many of the pets surrendered are older. that makes it harder for them to find new homes. they suggest people with pets make sure their leases say the animals are allowed so that you are protected if management or ownership of your building changes. jeff ken numb wants to change that. he says if amtrak lets people bring small dogs or cats on a carrier, that might encourage them to ride the trains. the people carrying pets they have to pay $25 and the animals can't weigh more than 20 pounds. last year 145 passengers took advantage of this new service.

welcome back to mornings on 2 this morning. san diego police are investigating a bizarre case where an officer shot a naked burglary suspect. police say the officer was responding to a 911 call when he was attacked by the naked man. investigators say the officer dropped his gun. the two began fighting for it. the officer says he tried to use a stun gun on the man twice but that it didn't work. after a struggle, he got his gun back and shot the accused burglar in the stomach. the man who lives in the house where it all happens says his mom ran to a neighbor for help. >> mom called me and said she was getting ready for work and said a naked guy tried to break into the house. >> san diego police say the

officer has minor injuries. the suspect was taken to the hospital for treatment and at last word was listed in stable condition. time is 6:12. the group that hosts san francisco's popular pink saturday event during pride week is stepping aside. the sisters overpeer petechial indulgence says it has made it a challenge to keep going. pink saturday is a street party until the saturday night before the annual pride parade. recent years there has been a deadly shooting, violent robbery, and a suspected hate crime. scott weiner told the examiner he plans to work with city officials and the sisters to find some other groups to host the event. soon shoppers at a popular grocery store chain you won't be able to find cigarettes for sale. they will stop selling tobacco products in order to promote a healthy living style. janine de la vega is joining us live now. you're in campbell to tell us

more about this move. good morning, janine. >> reporter: good morning, dave. this nob hill just opened up their doors. by the end of the month they will all be gone. railey's management says they have stopped ordering tobacco products. the grocer which is based in west sacramento says its decision was based on the health and happiness of its customers. they say the evidence was too hard to ignore. eating sugary snacks and drinking alcohol in moderation poses a significant health risk to adults. cvs stopped selling cigarettes at its stores for health reasons as well. we did speak with one man who department want to go on camera because he used to work for a

big tobacco company. he called raley's decision a bold move. the store has been open for ten minutes and we plan to talk to more people about the decision. back to you. >> thank you. we've had some very warm weather here but ice is forming at leva stadium. the sharks will take on the kings on saturday. this is time lapse video of the stadium's transformation. 75,000 fans are expected to attend the game. that is three dimes the capacity of the shark tank. >> hockey is great indoors. but to add 30,000-50,000 people that makes it an even greater experience. this is a story about pam's favorite guy. after playing with the giants and oakland a's, pitcher barry zito is making a comeback in

oakland. zito will sign a major league deal with the a's. he will get $1 million base salary if he makes oakland's big league roster. but the giants let him go after the 2013 season paying him a $7 million buyout. so we'll see what happens next. >> yeah. i love watching him. he's had a bit of a roller coaster career there. >> he did pretty well for himself financially. >> real well. >> and he was key in the 2012 victory. really well in a couple of the play off games. and he plays the guitar.

let's go out. i was just updating this. southbound 101 all lanes are open. southbound 101. there was a van that damaged the guardrail and really did damage to the fence. they were able to open up the freeway temporarily. it looks likuta will finish that work. northbound 101 though you will see some slow traffic in san jose. bay bridge toll plaza that traffic is backed up here as you drive westbound. and on 880 the traffic is going pretty well. there is an accident blocking the right lane. this will have bigger delays than usual. a fog bank out there. one that would rook more like it should be around june or

july. it is really extensive and making a pretty good surge there inland. it will be cooler today for everybody. even out toward areas i know a couple reports out toward eastern contra costa county. there is a little cloud deck yet. most say cloudy with fog. it is the coastal variety. today will not have any record highs. yesterday on the high desert. redding set a record high of 78. oakland 75 downtown. and richmond 75. not today. not oakland and richmond they will be about 62. we will go 60 today. down 15-degrees from sunday's high. again it's like a huge drop. and oakland 75 yesterday going 62 today.

there is too much in the way of low clouds and fog. san jose starting off with cloudy skies. today we will go 66 which is slightly above average. the low 54. record high 81 back in 1930. not even close today. a few high clouds spinning offshore. mendocino county and lake county but the fog is a big deal for us. it went from barely anything yesterday to extensive here. 50s on most of the temps. 40s. it's kind of a mild pattern for some. the higher elevations are the key. they have just plummeted on the temps. from 50s and 10:s and the 40s and find more 50s. but i mean these are held up by that fog and the westerly or west, southwest breeze in place. oakland west. they've had an east wind for a long time coming off the berkeley hills. not today. northwest at napa. concord west, southwest. 23 up in truckee.

61 down in san diego. get ready thursday will be the big plunge of the arctic air. zero in minneapolis. it will go all the way down to miami. of course it will be modified by the time it get there is but they are looking for low 40s for them. some snow continues. i've seen 3-8-9 inches around virginia. that big news will be on thursday. for us the big news is the cooler pattern. a little clouds and mist out there. it's a west wind on shore breeze which means 50s and 60s. upper 50s for some in areas that were 75. they will be in the upper 50s and a lot of 60s. even inland areas will drop a little warmer toward the end of the week. a little warmer a little cooler. >> thank you. right now 6:20. 100 people are still in the running for a one-way trip to mars. a controversial reality television funded project called mars one hopes to put four people on mars ten years

welcome back. new this morning at least 18 people are dead after a carnival float in haiti hit a power line. it happened last night as thousands of people packed the island nation's capitol city for mardi gras celebrations. people at the scene say someone on the float used a pole to move a power line so that the float could pass underneath it but instead people on the float were instantly electrocuted. the accident set off a panic at the parade with hundreds of people rushing to local hospitals. police activity outside lax set off a wave of panic inside the airport. yesterday officers were called in to help an unarmed man who they say may have been trying

to commit suicide but someone came on the airport's pa system and mistakenly announced that a gunman was on the loose. that sent about 20 passengers running from a gate area on to the tarmac, through an emergency door and it took police about 15 minutes to get everyone under control. time is 6:24. santa rosa police arrested three people after a big fight outside of a bar where people were waiting to get a taste of a popular beer. this happened yesterday afternoon in the parking lot behind the russian river brewing company on fourth street. there was a line outside with people waiting to taste pliny the younger beer. about 13 people were brawling by the time the police arrived. the fight involved her security staff and a group of men and women who had been drinking in that bar earlier. a famous wooden moose head that disappeared from napa on new years eve has been returned. it turned up in the mayor's driveway on sunday night. still no word on who took it.

the colorful wooden sculpture weighs more than 100 pounds. now it was stole fran a eucalyptus tree. that land is currently being redeveloped. so now that the moose head is back, city officials have to figure out what to do with it. one option is to display it as downtown joe's brewery and restaurant on main street. i like this story. southern california family out on a kayak in santa barbara had an unexpected visitor. a playful sea lion pup. hopped into the kayak and went along for a ride. family says they first spotted the sea lion pup swimming in the water and out of nowhere they noticed hey, we're not alone in the boat. >> i could feel something on the kayak because it kind of rocked a little. and then i look back here and there was a little sea lion out there. >> who is that behind dad? dad says the sea lion road with them for more than an hour. he is talking to it. at one point it tried to sit in

dad's lap. marine animal experts say don't get this close to sea lions they can be unpredictable. this pup was not aggressive and it really seemed like it was enjoying itself out on the water. >> that is the cutest thing. he just wanted to hang out with the family. >> rest up a little bit. >> love that. time now is 6:27. and he died protecting a coworker. >> he died a hero and i will always respect him. i owe my life to him. >> so many people. so hit by this story. we are learning about the final moments of a south bay security guard killed while trying to stop two robbery suspects. >> we're live in south san francisco where rescue crews are now entering the eighth hour in this search for a missing fisherman. we'll tell you what happened to the other people that were on the canoe with him. >> we do have some slow traffic on the east bay commute. here on 680 it looks okay but on 80 westbound we have some

more upper 60s. there is a lot of fog. yesterday some record highs. that will not be the case today. at least not around here. for us low clouds and fog. there is a pretty good little extension on that. it's moved way inland. low clouds, fog a westerly breeze or more of an on shore component. cooler and breezy conditions later today. the feel high clouds to the north they continue to rotate over the top of the ridge. much cooler pattern here. the low clouds and fog will be slow to retreat for some. 50s on the temps or 40s. these are on the mild side compared to where we have been. it's cooler in antioch and brentwood. west, southwest 13 at fairfield. westerly at oakland. west, northwest at oakland. there is a big fog bank out there. low clouds, mist. cooler and breezy. a west wind and temperatures 50s near the coast.

60nd mid to a few upper far enough inland. out of those 70s for most. all right sal front and center here. brokaw has reopened. there is one lane closed. they have opened up the freeway and traffic is getting by. one of the bigger problems is in the commute direction for most people. that would be westbound interstate 80. westbound coming in from the carquinez bridge to the maze. we've had a couple different crashes along the way. we can go to the maps now. 80 westbound is very slow from just west of highway 4 down to the first crash on westbound 80 in the area of mcbride and that area has been slow. we had an earlier accident there. they are moving it off the shoulder. and then down near gill man there is is another crash there. so these two accidents really have things messed up on the east shore freeway. again 33 minute drive time as you drive through the area. let's go to the bay bridge toll

plaza and show you traffic is backed up for a 15-20 minute delay. the traffic will be slow this morning as you drive through. now i also want to mention that traffic is going to be a little bit slow in san jose. southbound 101 at brokaw that right lane is still closed because of the problem we mentioned. again the freeway traffic is getting by but one lane is still closed. 6:33 let's go back to the desk. we are following developing news on the peninsula and the desperate search going on for a man missing out on the bay. the search started as a canoe accident that left the man's father dead. tara moriarty has learned now the missing manmade a heroic effort to try to get some help tara. >> reporter: that is is right. and in 15 minutes it will get significantly lighter out. now we know the three people took off from here were at the oyster point arena around 1:30

yesterday afternoon in a canoe in order to go fishing. two of those people were found about a mile or two offshore in their life jackets around 1:30 and 2:00 in the morning. but the 22-year-old man still missing. we saw police and fire combing the waters edge around 4:00 this morning looking for any trace of him. his girlfriend the 22-year-old woman who was rescued says the trio's canoe sank so her boyfriend swam to shore for help. he's been missing ever since. the man's father was found but later died at the hospital. the woman is being treated a the the hospital and we are now entering the eighth hour of this search. call came until just before 10:30 last night. it will be a lot easier for crews to find a once the sun comes up here. we are told that the 22-year- old was wearing a blue life jacket, gray shorts with white

stripes and a black word security printed on the back. we'll of course keep you posted on the search efforts here. live from south city i'm tara moriarty back to you. >> thank you. time is 6:34. the u.s. secretary of labor. nine month old labor dispute between the 29 west coast ports. over the weekend the port were shut down by terminal operators. they are expected to be called back before 9:00 this morning. the pacific mair time association the work shifts have been cut and there is a shortage of equipment for unloading all of those ships. >> they can go to mexican ports. they can go to canadian ports.

shippers begin to look for alternatives. >> federal mediator has ordered a medial blackout over the talks. but there are reports that both sides will be meeting with labor secretary thomas perez today. president obama sent perez to the talks. he's worried about the growing economic damage from the labor dispute. el cerrito police are searching for two suspects in a violent robbery at a pizza place last night. alex savidge is joining us now from el cerrito where police are especially concerned because a worker was shot despite doing what the robbers told her what to do. >> reporter: yeah. that woman was shot in the arm. the good news is she was talking, she was awake as paramedics took her away after she was shot during the robbery that happened last night. it was at a little caesar's restaurant that is on san pablo avenue. that woman according to el

cerrito started working just before 8:30. the men had hooded sweatshirts that covered their faces. at some point, one another robbers opened fire on that employee hitting her in the arm. the men grabbed cash and took off. police are not sure what prompted the shooting but they say they want to get the two robbers off the streets. >> it is unfortunate that they did this. we don't know if they will do it again. we hope not. but anyone that sees something like that should be careful.

[ technical difficulties ] reporter doug is live in washington, d.c. where it is a snow day for the federal government. >> reporter: pam, good morning. that is right. you can see the streets behind me here are just about empty. just a couple of cars. this should be the tail end of rush hour but you take all of the federal employees around here out of the mix and it's a pretty quiet snowy, cold morning. workers spent the night clearing a path for federal workers in washington. most of whom are not likely to show up today. the capitol dome shrouded in scaffolding and snow. >> it looks like a lot of snow. >> it's accumulating yes. >> reporter: the bigger deal is

where it's accumulating. this is not boston or new york. much of this is hitting the south. even in arkansas they were struggling with icy roads. >> we put salt, sand down for the intersections so nobody sliding. >> reporter: north carolina bracing for the storm that promised to snarl rush hour traffic. in west virginia emergency crews after a train derailment. there is no indication. just outside of washington at andrews air force base, president obama was in for something of a weather shock as he returned home from a golf vacation in sunny california. and elsewhere in the d.c. area store shelves were looking bare. part of their routine around here even with the whisper of snow. but this time road crews are having to deal with a new wrinkle.

frigid temperatures that require some different tactics. >> regular salt begins to lose its effectiveness at about 23 degrees. 22 degrees. if you notice some of the salt we have here is green, that is the treated salt. that has effectiveness to about 7 degrees. >> reporter: you see the tour buses behind me here. the double decker buses. people are on those. thankfully they are covered on the top because it will be very, very cold. especially over the next few days where the temperatures are really expected to drop. there is a concern obviously that a lot of the slush that you see on the roads here will become ice pretty quickly. pam. >> boy, i can imagine. thank you. 6:40 is the time. people in san jose continue to pay tribute to a security guard who was shot and killed over the weekend. last night friends gathered in front of the san jose nightclub wheremanny zuniga was shot and killed saturday night. the father of two was known for

helping other people. when he saw the liquor store next door being robbed, he jumped in to help. a fellow security guard says zuniga saved his life that night. >> the guy could have driven away but instead one of the guys stuck out a gun and started shooting at us. he took all the bullets that were aimed directly at me and saved my life. >> police still have not released any suspect description at this time expect the fact they are look for two men. zuniga's friend has started a go fund me website to raise money for his funeral and the nightclub where he works has raised money and plans to give it to his mother today. a federal judge in texas temporarily blocked president obama's executive actions on immigration. the judges ruling gives 26 states time to pursue a lawsuit that aims to permanently stop

the orders. it would have allowed almost 5 million undocumented immigrants who's children are immigrants to be protected from that order. right now it's 6:41. help for a bay area woman who is battling a flesh eating bacteria. coming up in 20 minutes the community effort to rally behind her and the symptoms she suffered before she went to see her doctor. >> good morning. we are looking at slow traffic for this morning's commute. i want to show you the san mateo bridge and that traffic continues to look heavier and heavier by the moment. >> and we're also looking at fog. a lot of fog. in fact, more than we have seen in a long time. it does not look like a february pattern. more like a june or july but it will cause issues today.

just a huge fire and it is still burning after that -- at least 14 of them caught fire syping smoke and flames hundreds of feet into the air. some of the oil is now in the

river. people have been forced out of their homes but it's not clear when that will be because it's just too dangerous for firefighters to try to put out the flames. they are just letting it burn out. that derailment in west virginia is expected to raise more concerns here in the bay area. the concern is over the preppiesed increase of crude oil rail cars going right through the bay area. ktvu fox 2 brian flores is in benicia where they want to use trains to carry crude. brian. >> that is right. even before the accident in west virginia there was already plenty of concern from the proposal to send more rail cars. particularly through parts of northern california to refineries in richmond and behind me here in benicia. they increase the amount of rail cars cars not just

mentioning today but knack in 2013 until canada where a train with 63 tank cars carrying crude exploded carrying more than 40 people. according to the energy commission, oil by rail imports only expected to jump one million barrels delivered by rail back in 2011. that jumped to 6 million last year. officials estimate that could increase by over 100 barrels. over 100 million barrels by next year. as we take you back out here live, this is something that won't happen over night. it's been reported that city officials are reworking the environmental impact report and they say that report could be completed sometime in the summer. pam, back to you.

gras is the last celebration before lent. we do have slow traffic this morning if you are driving on 80. that is where we will start. 80 westbound is very slow. we had a couple of earlier crashes. one in richmond and one in berkeley and traffic is behind schedule. almost -- well i would say 46 minutes. is that almost an hour? well maybe not but pretty severe. usually we have 2025 -- usually we have 25-30 minutes. and i think that is partially because people are not getting through on the east shore freeway. it really has been very slow as you drive through. i also want to mention in san jose southbound 101 at brokaw road we had an earlier freeway closure. that has been reopened but the right lane is still closed in

the area. please give yourself extra time as you drive through. northbound 101 traffic is slow and so is northbound 280 at 17. 85 is also slow approaching the area and getting up to saratoga. now at 6:49 let's go to steve in the weather center. sal, we have a big fog bank out there. not something we always say in mid february but that is the case. it came back yesterday. i want to thank lynx. yeah she tweeted me and said sal san francisco has drizzle. also around oakland but the fog and low clouds for most, most of the reporting stations everybody says cloudy. it will be much cooler today coast and bay drizzle. a june pattern. it's a dry pattern as well. there is no sign of any rain. we did have record highs yesterday. this will probably be it for us. i think everything is starting to cool town. on the high desert lancaster

welcome back to mornings on 2 the time is 6:55. the white house is hosting a three-day summit on countering violent extremists. this will highlight domestic and international violence. >> president obama is scheduled to address the group tomorrow and thursday. representatives from more than 60 countries are attending the summit along with the secretary general of the united nations. the bay area is reacting to the video released by isis showing the beheading of 21 egyptian christians. at san antonio church in hayward, they are reacting with sadness and outrage. the 21 victims, most of them young men died as martyrs. >> we are sad for their family.
